My Portrait in Perfume

Inspired by Undina, of course, with a nod to The Unseen Censer.  Thanks, ladies!  (Updated May 2018)

Perfumes I adore, in no particular order:

  • Mary Greenwell Plum
  • Parfums de Nicolai Le Temps d’une Fete
  • Parfums de Rosine Rose d’Ete
  • Parfums de Nicolai Vanille Tonka
  • Coty Emeraude (vintage only, parfum de toilette for preference)
  • Chanel No. 19 (I prefer vintage eau de toilette, but the modern eau de parfum is nice)
  • Amouage Memoir Woman
  • Serge Lutens La Myrrhe
  • Teo Cabanel Alahine
  • Sonoma Scent Studio Tabac Aurea
  • Coty Chypre parfum (the vintage-vintage, not the 1980s rerelease)
  • L’Arte di Gucci eau de parfum
  • Frederic Malle Iris Poudre
  • Cuir de Lancome
  • Crown Perfumery Crown Bouquet
  • Vintage Balmain Jolie Madame, in parfum only
  • Soivohle Centennial
  • Parfums DelRae Wit

Perfumes I enjoy and wear often:

  • Guerlain Chamade, in any concentration, vintage or modern, it’s all good
  • Chanel Bois des Iles
  • Ines de la Fressange, 1999 version by Calice Becker
  • DSH Rose Vert
  • Ferre 20
  • Amouage Lyric Woman
  • Hanae Mori Haute Couture
  • Moschino Funny!
  • Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune
  • DSH Susinon/1000 Lilies
  • Mariella Burani
  • Caron Parfum Sacre
  • Tom Ford Black Orchid Voile de Fleur
  • By Kilian Sweet Redemption
  • Dior Dolce Vita parfum
  • Donna Karan Gold eau de parfum
  • DSH La Fete Nouvelle
  • Juliet Has a Gun Citizen Queen
  • Givenchy Organza Indecence
  • Guerlain Apres l’Ondee
  • Hermes Kelly Caleche eau de parfum (the eau de toilette does not work for me, it is too vegetal and citric)
  • DelRae Amoureuse
  • Lubin Epidor
  • Penhaligon’s Violetta

Perfumes that do not work for me (that’s nicer than saying Perfumes I Despise, right?):

  • Anything Estee Lauder, because there’s something in the base that makes me feel nauseated (the only exceptions so far being Pure White Linen Light Breeze, which doesn’t even have a base, and Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia).
  • Yves St. Laurent Opium and Calvin Klein Obsession, plus Lauder Youth Dew which I absolutely cannot stand.
  • fruity chypres I tend to find nauseating and curdled on my skin. (Sorry, Mitsouko. Sorry, So Pretty. Sorry, Jubilation 25.)
  • traditional colognes bore me
  • fougeres are too much like men’s Y-front undies: fine for guys, not made for me
  • Guerlain Insolence eau de parfum, one of the three samples I did not either retain as a reference or pass on to someone else. No, that one went STRAIGHT out to the trashcan, and I didn’t even (intentionally) put it on my skin.  It shrieked me right out of humor.
  • SSS Vintage Rose
  • Etat Libre d’Orange Secretions Magnifiques (ohhhhhh, don’t get me started)

Perfumes I like smelling on The CEO:

  • Gres Cabaret
  • Hermes Eau de Merveilles
  • Jovan Sex Appeal (yes, really)
  • Halston Z-14

Perfumes I like smelling on other family members:

  • Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight in Paris on Gaze
  • Chanel Egoiste on Gaze
  • Christian Audigier Ed Hardy for Men on Taz
  • Calvin Klein Shock for Him on either son (huh, all of these are aromatic woody scents…)
  • Hanae Mori on Bookworm
  • Bath & Body Works Dark Kiss on Bookworm
  • Donna Karan Gold EdP on Bookworm
  • Prada Infusion d’Iris EdP on Bookworm
  • Chanel No. 5 on my mother
  • Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Flora Nymphea on my mother
  • Old Spice on my father
  • Christian Dior Dune on my sister-in-law E

    1. Annie, I’m so sorry, but it’s been discontinued for about 15 years now. You might try eBay, but I can’t promise you’ll find it. If you’d like to try something else that reminds me of it, Maison Francis Kurkdjian Lumiere Noire pour femme is a pretty good substitute (MFK has a website).
